Conservation
Conservation, or energy efficiency, should be first on
your agenda when considering renewable energy. Whidbey Sun &
Wind can help you conserve by conducting an Energy Conservation Survey
on your home.
Energy efficiency is the most cost efficient way to save
energy, cut down on greenhouse gasses, and live sustainably. In
general, every $1 you spend on conservation will save you $3 -- $5 on
the cost of a renewable energy system needed to produce that energy.
See our conservation
checklist for more information on conserving energy in your
home today. |

Passive
Solar Design
Consider
passive solar design to reduce heating and cooling costs. Space heating
and cooling accounts for 50% of home energy use. A properly designed
passive
solar structure uses significantly less energy than one designed
without attention to passive solar possibilities. We provide
consultation on passive solar design for new buildings, remodels, and
additions. |

Solar
Hot Water
Use
the sun to heat your home, your pool, or both. Water heating
accounts for 20% of home energy use. A solar water heater can
provide up to 90% of your hot water. If you are connected to the
electric grid, check with your power company about low-interest energy
conservation loans for solar water heating systems. If you have a
heated swimming pool, a solar pool heater can dramatically reduce your
energy use. If you have an unheated pool, a solar pool
heater can greatly extend your season of use. We sell and install top
quality
solar water heaters. |

Power Systems
Solar power modules, or photovoltaic (PV) panels, produce
electricity from the sun. PV systems are currently the most
costly
form of renewable energy, but expense and efficiency are improving
steadily. We design, sell, and install both grid-tied and stand-alone
systems. The incentives for generating power with a grid-tied system
are exceptional. You can sell power back to the grid for nearly 4 times what
you pay for power now. A Site Assessment and Consultation
from WSW will give you a
realistic idea of your potential to generate electricity with the
sun. |

Wind
Power Systems
Wind power is an excellent source of electricity if you have some space and a steady wind. New wind systems bear little resemblance to your grandparents' creaky old windmills. Tilt-up towers make erecting and servicing a wind turbine
easy. New turbines are also very quiet. WSW can assess your wind potential
and install a state-of-the-art wind system to meet your needs. As with
PV systems, you can even generate power to sell to the utility company.
A couple of caveats concerning wind systems...
First, if you have less than an acre a wind system may take up too much
of your space. Second, the tower has to be high enough so that the
turbine blades are 30 feet above any obstacle within 500 feet.
